Murang’a University of Technology Achieves Prestigious Gold Tier GFGP Certification

A proud moment for Murang’a University of Technology as Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dickson Nyariki and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tuitoek receive the Gold Tier GFGP Certification!

Murang’a University of Technology (MUT) has reached a historic milestone by being awarded the Gold Tier Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) certification—a globally recognized standard in grant management. This prestigious certification was granted by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) with support from KPMG and the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), solidifying MUT’s position as a leader in financial governance and accountability in research funding.

A Landmark Achievement for the University

Speaking at the award ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dickson M. Nyariki expressed immense pride in this achievement, emphasizing the university’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and governance in financial grant management. He noted that this certification is a testament to the university’s rigorous financial practices, making MUT a trusted steward of research grants and funding opportunities.

“This recognition is not just a testament to our institution’s commitment to excellence but also a reflection of the collective effort, dedication, and vision of everyone involved in this journey,” said Prof. Nyariki in his acceptance speech.

The journey to achieving GFGP certification began in March 2023, when the university underwent a comprehensive review of its human resource, finance, and procurement processes. Following this rigorous assessment, KPMG certified MUT as meeting the Gold Tier standard of ARS 1651:2018, marking the university’s compliance with the world’s first international standard in grant management.

The GFGP certification enhances MUT’s standing in several key areas:

  • Financial Governance: Ensures adherence to international standards, promoting transparency and accountability.
  • Global Partnerships: Strengthens the university’s attractiveness for international collaborations and funding opportunities.
  • Institutional Capacity: Identifies and addresses gaps in financial and grant management, reinforcing MUT’s overall operational strength.
  • Reputation Building: Elevates the university’s profile as a reliable and competent research institution.
  • Operational Efficiency: Standardizes financial practices, reduces inefficiencies, and ensures compliance with global best practices.

A Future of Stronger Collaborations

Beyond receiving this prestigious certification, MUT also signed a transformative Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with APHRC during the event. This partnership paves the way for:

  • Joint research collaborations and academic programs
  • Advanced grant writing training
  • Supervision of postgraduate students
  • Hosting international conferences

In his remarks, Prof. Nyariki extended an invitation to stakeholders for the university’s upcoming International Conference in November 2025, themed “Leveraging Innovation and Technological Advancement for Sustainable Development.”

The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the finance and administrative teams, university management, and council for their dedication to upholding the highest financial standards. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to sharing its expertise with other institutions across Africa, offering training, mentorship, and technical assistance in financial governance.

With this achievement, Murang’a University of Technology has set a new benchmark for financial excellence in Kenya’s higher education sector, proving that accountability and governance are the cornerstones of sustainable research and development.
