Prof. Beatrice J. W. Mugendi, PhD

Prof. Beatrice Mugendi is the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge Finance, Planning and Development. She is a professor of food chemistry and trained in strategic management with diverse experience in management in both private sector and public university. Prior to joining university, she worked in the private sector for eight years at supervisory management level. Her career in the university started as a tutorial fellow at Kenyatta University in 2003 where she worked till 2012. She then joined Dedan Kimathi University of Technology where she served as a pioneer Director for the Institute of Food Bioresources Technology and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research. She was a chairperson of many University project committees such as the Science and Technology Park development, Coffee Processing and Packaging Plant, Technical and Vocational Education and Training Upskilling for Trainers and Technicians, among others. She has demonstrated good academic leadership, research and consultancy ability through teaching and research, supervision of students at both undergraduate and post graduate levels, academic publishing in the area of food science and applied nutrition. She has been a reviewer of articles for publication in peer reviewed journals, has participated in organizing various workshops/seminars and conferences in the University. In addition, she has contributed to development MOUs that have benefited staff and students in the University through research and training at post graduate and certificate level in coffee Technology. She was part of the team that developed and packaged for the market two food products from the University. She is a lead auditor in Quality management systems (QMS), well versed with ISO management systems and has worked in the private sector as a Quality Management Representative. She has risen through the academic ranks of the University from Tutorial Fellow position to the current position as a Professor of food chemistry.

Professor Beatrice Mugendi graduated with a BSc in Food Science and Technology from University of Nairobi, MSc in Food Science from University of Florida and, PhD in Biochemistry from Kenyatta University. She holds an MBA in Strategic Management from Kenya Methodist University.

Finance, Planning and Development

Welcome to Murang’a University of Technology (MUT) where creativity and innovativeness are highly valued. The division of Finance, Planning and Development provides a conducive learning environment to support the University mission of advancing knowledge and technological transfer through teaching, training, learning, research, innovation, consultancy and community engagement for sustainable development. The division ensures prudent management of finances, effective planning, and oversight of development projects for enhanced delivery of services to students, staff and relevant stakeholders. Over the years, the division has continued to offer support in the following areas:

  • Development of infrastructure including the Science Complex, two hostels, renovation of the student medical clinic, offices and tuition block, and the completion of the perimeter wall. Works for a new tuition block with conference facilities is ongoing.
  • Provision of equipment and materials for learning including acquisition of 41,000 volumes of library books, work study program for students, University research grant for innovations, holistic student welfare programs including clubs and sports.
  • Provision of internet connectivity to the library, tuition blocks, student study areas and hostels facilitating access to online learning resources within the University and remotely.
  • Enhancement of Enterprise Resource Planning software for student information management, human resource, procurement and finance management enabling accurate and timely processing of data, further optimizing our processes and enhancing efficiency.
  • Management Systems; MUT is certified to ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems (QMS) standard with policies and work procedures put in place in all departments for increased efficiency resulting to improved customer satisfaction. Further, the University is certified to Information Security Management System (ISMS) Standard, ISO/IEC 27001:2013 and has enhanced confidence to interested parties that information security risks are adequately managed. The university ensures confidentiality, integrity and availability of data and information.
  • Performance Contracting; the University has been rated very good consistently and performance within various categories has continually improved.
  • The University has developed a ten-year Master Plan that is a guide to future infrastructural growth and development. The University’s Strategic Plan for the period 2023-2027 is aligned to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and the Kenya Vision 2030 Fourth Medium Term Plan (MTP IV) provides direction on how resources will allocated to achieve set goals for the next five years.
  • Community service and linkages where students and staff collaborate with the community in various joint programs.
